Locknuts are types of nuts that resist loosening by force or by vibration and they resist it because of some mechanism in it, either due to elastic rings or by any other methods. There are many types of locknuts such as castellated nut in which one end is segmented on one hand but both ends have capability to fasten them and when we finished it we applied a cotton pin or a safety wire to improve its security; distorted thread locknut utilize a portion of thread to provide safety against loosening and elliptical offset nuts, central locking nuts and top lock nuts are its sub groups; interfering thread nut is next type and it has a huge diameter and are most commonly used in permanent installations tapered thread nut is one of its example; next one is jam nut and almost very near to locknut and it is used in some special condition; jet nut is another special type which is most commonly used in standard automotives.
Externally visible locknuts are most commonly used in tyres in automobiles and vary in their sizes as for as the alloy rim of that particular vehicle is concerned. These are designed in such a manner that they are able to bear too much force and pressure during high-speed. They bear pressures, vibration and a huge amount of force very easily and can only be releasable with the help of only specific keys and pressure pipes. But, be careful after removing them because you will have to fasten them as tight as possible after change to safe yourself from any other mishap. Lock nuts are not only used in tyres, different units of body of a car is also joined with the help of these locknuts and important portions including engine and radiator are also assembled with these different types of locknuts. Key for opening of these locknuts is numbered and proper key should be used in order to unscrew proper locknut. If you use improperly fit key that might result in the breakage of these locknut and you will be in great trouble. Proper key with a proper angle is the only solution.
